In Germany, there are only few locations where the manufacturers of wind turbines can have their wind turbines calibrated for the purpose of a type certification. The test field in Grevenbroich is one of them.
21 years ago, the test field in Grevenbroich was inaugurated. On 01stof July 1998 the windtest grevenbroich gmbh (wtg) put the first prototype in operation on the Neurather Höhe south from Grevenbroich.
The test field measures 1,4 km², which is the size of 350 soccer pitches. In this location, wtg has installed prototypes and test turbines for several manufacturers with nominal powers between 600 kW and 3 MW and measured them in accordance with international standards. Up to eight turbines can be installed on the test field at the same time. After a general operation time of seven years the wind turbines are dismantled and replaced by new prototypes.

A Nordex 131, a Siemens SWT-2.3 with ATS tower, a Vensys 120 as well as a Vensys 77, a Lagerwey L82 and a eviag ev2.93. Several measurement masts with heights of up to 134 meters and an own verification station for remote sensing systems currently complement the test field.
Vertical Sky A32® - the first certifiable megawatt-class vertical-axis large wind turbine
The low turbulences of Vertical Sky® allow for installing it on the test field of currently eight wind turbines.
